The skin has 3 cutouts:



1) Screen Cutout

The cutout for the screen is very precise - its size matches exactly the size of the screen and it is accurately lined up with the screen.



2) SD Card & USB Connector Cutout

The SD card and USB connector both share the same cutout. The cutout is large enough so it won't interfere with access to the SD card slot and the USB connector.



3) Phone Jack Cutout



There is no cutout for the power button. Instead, an impression of the power button is molded into the silicone. The power button can be easily depressed with the skin over it.





-- Padding / Protection --



The skin is 3mm in thickness at the thickest parts to provide ample protection for the corners, sides, and back of the Nuvi from minor bumps. The back area is inevitably left exposed to allow for the deployment of the antenna. Still, the surrounding skin is so thick that the Nuvi will be protected from an impact if it were to land flat on its back.



-- Ergonomics --



The rubbery texture of the silicone and the molded ridges on the sides help to greatly improve your grip on the Nuvi and reduces the likelihood of the Nuvi inadvertently slipping from your grasp.





Screen Protector

The screen protector is almost a perfect fit for the screen and leaves just a miniscule gap around the screen. But to all intents and purposes, it will do quite nicely in protecting the screen from scratches. My screen protector, unfortunately, came with a few minute scratches (nothing a little Scratch Remover can't fix).



-- Application --



You have to peel away a protective film to expose the tacky surface of the screen protector. But before you do that, make sure the Nuvi and your fingers are clean; this thing's a dust magnet. After the screen protector is applied, smooth it out with the included microfiber cloth. You may notice a few trapped air bubbles -- do not let that bother you; these bubbles will disappear over time.



-- Functionality --



With the screen protector on, the touch screen stays responsive and I have not noticed any decrease in its sensitivity.



Conclusion

----------

The silicone skin / screen protector combo is a very good value (Boxwave sells their Screen Protector alone for more than half of what this combo costs) and it works very well in protecting your investment. Definitely recommended!

This is an excellent, rugged protective case for your Nuvi 300 Series GPS. It fits perfectly and has all the appropriate port openings to allow you to connect and mount your GPS device.



It has plenty of cushioning to absorb shocks. It also comes with a screen protector to give you the 100% solution for scratch protection. The only downside was that the screen protector was a bit difficult to install. When we tried to peel the first side of the sticker off, the adhesive tab came loose. Nevertheless, it now is properly installed and looks great!

Oh, we're darned if we do and darned if we don't. Loose fit or tight fit?



Well, the Neoprene Sleeve Carrying Case for the Garmin Nuvi 255W is, in fact, a loose fit.



Now, why would that be a problem?



Actually it isn't REALLY a problem in terms of function, but a tighter fitting Neoprene cover apparently would make me "feel better" psychologically, about it.



Ok, maybe there is a legitimate "protection" reason, i.e. the looser fit allows for shifting of the device within the sleeve, which might make it less safe - from exactly what, I'm not sure.



Maybe it's just that it's a waste of fabric.



Or, maybe it's that the extra fabric bunches a bit, which makes it more difficult to cram down in your day bag.



Positive Features:



I think the wrist strap is a plus. I had a case that did not have the wrist strap. This means that to transport the Garmin, you have to pick up the actual Garmin - and the more times you come in contact with it, even through a Neoprene Sleeve, the more likely you are to scratch the screen or the casing.



That all being said, I don't recommend habitually twirling the thing around on the wrist strap because 1) you're likely to let it go and break it and 2) you might, very well, wack some unspecting soul in the noggin.



The wrist strap is detachable, in case you find it annoying or your find a 6 year old who can't resist swinging the thing around and hitting people in the noggin.



Fashion colors are always a nice addition to any of these product lines. You really only need one of these things, so choose wisely. I'm not aware of too many people that try to match their Garmin pouches to their outfits. But hey, if that's your bag... have at it.



The zipper is "rubberized" so that it won't scratch up the device if you zip too close.



There is a zip pocket on this sleeve, for what, precisely, I'm not sure. The power cord is really a tight squeeze for this pouch, and I have to tell you, while I know the neoprene is a great fabric to protect devices like this, I just don't see the plus side of cramming anything with metal on it inside the pocket of the Sleeve. The pocket isn't a design "flaw" per se - but really, it's unnecessary, in my book.



However, (and more on Garmin safety in a moment) I take my Garmin out of my car a lot, especially when I'm in the grocery store. And what do you know, coupons fit in that little pocket. I'm certain it wasn't designed for that, but in case you're trying to figure out what could or should go in there.... how about coupons... or a few dollars....or a torn off return address from an envelope that you're going to plug in to the device. Or many it's a quick tear from a flyer with an address of a store you want to go to.



We've used the sleeve with positive results. No scratches or bumps or bruises. I suppose the extra space within the sleeve is nice in that it's easy to get the device in an out.



And finally, it's Neoprene. Neoprene is not waterPROOF, but it is waterRESISTANT. So, when you step out of the car and get hit by a sprinkler, you don't ruin your Garmin. Likewise, you're late and running in the rain, probably don't ruin your Garmin. I do not recommend diving in the pool with it in the Neoprene, or allowing it to be used as a bath toy because Neoprene does, in fact, take on water.



Not so positive things - There's nothing BAD. Just useless pockets, in my opinion, and a bagginess that's just more of an annoyance than anything else. But at least you can have an apple green annoyance, if you so choose.



A NOTE ON SAFETY:



Garmins, and all GPS systems, are hot targets for thieves. It literally takes them under 3 seconds to steal yours. They smash your window, grab it, and they are gone.



Accordingly, these Neoprene Sleeves are a handy way to keep your Garmin safe, not only from scratches and such, but from thieves -- that is if you will remember to take your Garmin with you when you "exit your vehicle." Likewise, do not leave the mounting bracket on the dash or windshield as this is nothing more than an advertisement to thieves - "Hey, lookie here, there's probably a GPS in this car." I can't tell you the number of people I know who take their Garmins out of their cars but leave the mounting brackets up - only to have their window smashed and then things tossed about in the car because the thief was annoyed that the Garmin wasn't there.



Yes, you can lock it in the glove box, but in under 10 seconds, they will smash your window and open the box with a screwdriver.



So, TAKE THE GARMIN WITH YOU - and since you should do that, give one of these Neoprene cases a try.

This bag has enough room to put the Garmin Nuvi widescreen in and the power cord; it's a squeeze but definately can be done. The zipper is plastic coated so it won't scratch the screen of the GPS as you slide it in and out of the case. The inside is soft so it won't scratch the screen. The handle to carry it is convenient to slip over your hand so you don't drop it; much like a camera case. I would recommend the product; for the price and quality it's worth it. I just wanted a little case to have some extra protection for my nuvi255. I got the blue case - it looks as pictured, so I'm pleased in that department. As another reviewer stated, it is a loose fit. I was hoping for something a little more snug, and with a little more padding inside, but I guess for the price I can't complain! It definitely fits in there, and there's room for the card charger. If it was a little more snug and more padded I would have given it 5 stars.

I regularly ride in a friend's shiny new 2009 Porsche and I have to say, their GPS sucks by comparison! You'd think a $100k+ sports car would have a killer GPS -- NOT! The maps were sparse, the colors muted, the speech barely audible and the user interface convoluted and unintuitive. Now I know Porsche's primary concern is the car, not the GPS, but for a top dollar luxury product, you'd think their GPS would be equally cutting edge. I honestly prefer my Garmin Nuvi 5000. The difference is stark! Its no wonder Garmin is widely considered to make the best GPS units on the market.



I zeroed in on the Nuvi 5000 primarily because of the larger screen and that it's one of the few GPS units to support a backup camera. For those of you who don't know, a backup camera is a tiny video camera (mine is the size of a dime) that mounts on the back of your car, often the license plate, with a video cable run to a monitor or GPS mounted on the dash. Then when you put your car in reverse, the cam turns on and you get a live video image of what's behind your car! Very helpful when parallel parking or backing up and you see so much more than with a rearview mirror alone! It's one of those things that once you have it, you wonder why it took so long or how you ever lived without it!



Backup cams aren't just for big SUVs or trucks. I have mine on a sedan and really love the extra perspective it gives. It's such a luxury to be able to SEE everything with no blind spots!!! LOVE it!!! As more cars come standard with GPS units, I could see backup cams becoming standard issue. It's so much safer to backup with the extra visibility and virtually no blind spots!



Setup was easy. I got a vent mount for the Nuvi itself since windshield mounts are illegal in California. But I actually prefer the vent mount anyway since it places the Nuvi at the perfect level without obstructing my view of the road. Then I mounted the tiny cam above my rear license plate. Hooked up the ground and power wires to the rear tail light - the one that lights up only in reverse -- then ran the cable through the trunk, behind the rear seat, along the floor panels and to the Nuvi. It's not as hard as it sounds and there are videos on YouTube that can help clarify. It took me about 90min to hook it all up. And I even hardwired the Nuvi to the car's fuse box so it automatically turns on and off with the car's ignition.



The GPS itself is stellar. The colors are vibrant and inviting. The satellite response time is lightening fast and the interface is easy, intuitive and very user friendly. I was able to use 90% of the functions without even reading the User Guide. It's that easy and straightforward. I even set up specific routes I like to take to work and other destinations so the Nuvi can take the roads I prefer and get me back on track if I take a detour to avoid traffic and such.



The "Points of Interest" feature is amazing!! Just type in what you're looking for - a specific grocery store, department store, drugstore, gas station, etc and the Nuvi finds all the nearby matches! I haven't searched anything yet that it can't find! Very thorough database and up to date too!



While navigating, the verbal cues are loud and clear. And the screen itself had loads of useful info. I like the estimated time of arrival feature. I like how it changes the color scheme automatically for night and day making it easier to read in both cases. I love being able to play solitaire while waiting for someone to come out of a store. I love feeling like I'll never get lost or have a problem finding anything in a big city like L.A.! But most of all, I love the backup cam!! And be sure to setup a security code so no one can mess with your settings; a thief, valet or anyone else.



It really is such a luxury to have a quality GPS!! Sometimes I just use it as a live map depicting where I am without inputting my destination. It's helpful to have a live visual confirmation of where you are and what streets are nearby.



For my first GPS, I have to say I'm quite impressed with the Nuvi 5000! Welcome to the 21st century!!! Definitely get one!! You'll be glad you did!

Looking at the original and this generic side-by-side, one could hardly tell which is which. Plugs into your lighter socket, and has enough length to reach about any location in the front of a vehicle.

I had my Garmin for less than a year before the cigarette adapter tip broke! I've had other cheaper adapters which get more frequently used and haven't had any issues with those. I'd look for a different manufacturer.

So far the device has worked for a few months on my Legend Cx. It is a must have for any car navigation as you will need to keep the backlight on. Seems to be a sturdy design. I would say it is a good buy for the price.

 "Protects your Garmin, but let's it hang "loose."" 2009-06-25

Oh, we're darned if we do and darned if we don't. Loose fit or tight fit?



Well, the Neoprene Sleeve Carrying Case for the Garmin Nuvi 255W is, in fact, a loose fit.



Now, why would that be a problem?



Actually it isn't REALLY a problem in terms of function, but a tighter fitting Neoprene cover apparently would make me "feel better" psychologically, about it.



Ok, maybe there is a legitimate "protection" reason, i.e. the looser fit allows for shifting of the device within the sleeve, which might make it less safe - from exactly what, I'm not sure.



Maybe it's just that it's a waste of fabric.



Or, maybe it's that the extra fabric bunches a bit, which makes it more difficult to cram down in your day bag.



Positive Features:



I think the wrist strap is a plus. I had a case that did not have the wrist strap. This means that to transport the Garmin, you have to pick up the actual Garmin - and the more times you come in contact with it, even through a Neoprene Sleeve, the more likely you are to scratch the screen or the casing.



That all being said, I don't recommend habitually twirling the thing around on the wrist strap because 1) you're likely to let it go and break it and 2) you might, very well, wack some unspecting soul in the noggin.



The wrist strap is detachable, in case you find it annoying or your find a 6 year old who can't resist swinging the thing around and hitting people in the noggin.



Fashion colors are always a nice addition to any of these product lines. You really only need one of these things, so choose wisely. I'm not aware of too many people that try to match their Garmin pouches to their outfits. But hey, if that's your bag... have at it.



The zipper is "rubberized" so that it won't scratch up the device if you zip too close.



There is a zip pocket on this sleeve, for what, precisely, I'm not sure. The power cord is really a tight squeeze for this pouch, and I have to tell you, while I know the neoprene is a great fabric to protect devices like this, I just don't see the plus side of cramming anything with metal on it inside the pocket of the Sleeve. The pocket isn't a design "flaw" per se - but really, it's unnecessary, in my book.



However, (and more on Garmin safety in a moment) I take my Garmin out of my car a lot, especially when I'm in the grocery store. And what do you know, coupons fit in that little pocket. I'm certain it wasn't designed for that, but in case you're trying to figure out what could or should go in there.... how about coupons... or a few dollars....or a torn off return address from an envelope that you're going to plug in to the device. Or many it's a quick tear from a flyer with an address of a store you want to go to.



We've used the sleeve with positive results. No scratches or bumps or bruises. I suppose the extra space within the sleeve is nice in that it's easy to get the device in an out.



And finally, it's Neoprene. Neoprene is not waterPROOF, but it is waterRESISTANT. So, when you step out of the car and get hit by a sprinkler, you don't ruin your Garmin. Likewise, you're late and running in the rain, probably don't ruin your Garmin. I do not recommend diving in the pool with it in the Neoprene, or allowing it to be used as a bath toy because Neoprene does, in fact, take on water.



Not so positive things - There's nothing BAD. Just useless pockets, in my opinion, and a bagginess that's just more of an annoyance than anything else. But at least you can have an apple green annoyance, if you so choose.



A NOTE ON SAFETY:



Garmins, and all GPS systems, are hot targets for thieves. It literally takes them under 3 seconds to steal yours. They smash your window, grab it, and they are gone.



Accordingly, these Neoprene Sleeves are a handy way to keep your Garmin safe, not only from scratches and such, but from thieves -- that is if you will remember to take your Garmin with you when you "exit your vehicle." Likewise, do not leave the mounting bracket on the dash or windshield as this is nothing more than an advertisement to thieves - "Hey, lookie here, there's probably a GPS in this car." I can't tell you the number of people I know who take their Garmins out of their cars but leave the mounting brackets up - only to have their window smashed and then things tossed about in the car because the thief was annoyed that the Garmin wasn't there.



Yes, you can lock it in the glove box, but in under 10 seconds, they will smash your window and open the box with a screwdriver.



So, TAKE THE GARMIN WITH YOU - and since you should do that, give one of these Neoprene cases a try.

This bag has enough room to put the Garmin Nuvi widescreen in and the power cord; it's a squeeze but definately can be done. The zipper is plastic coated so it won't scratch the screen of the GPS as you slide it in and out of the case. The inside is soft so it won't scratch the screen. The handle to carry it is convenient to slip over your hand so you don't drop it; much like a camera case. I would recommend the product; for the price and quality it's worth it. The colors I bought were Blue and grey. The picture looks like the color you get.

I just wanted a little case to have some extra protection for my nuvi255. I got the blue case - it looks as pictured, so I'm pleased in that department. As another reviewer stated, it is a loose fit. I was hoping for something a little more snug, and with a little more padding inside, but I guess for the price I can't complain! It definitely fits in there, and there's room for the card charger. If it was a little more snug and more padded I would have given it 5 stars.

I wanted a cheap case to prevent the screen from being scratched on my Garmin Nuvi 255W. That is exactly what it does. It is a loose fit. I cram the car power cord in the zip pocket on the side (which is a tight fit). I then put the whole thing in my suitcase when traveling.



Works well.
