Customer Buzz
It *should* be a great product, but the problem is that it comes with old maps. Wouldn't normally be a big deal, but new roads get built over time, so they direct you to update the maps (free!). That is where the problem begins.

The update software is not intended for the 200. It is designed for units with more horsepower. And it doesn't work. It completely screwed up my unit, and judging from the complaints on Google, everyone elses too.

Their C/S queue is about 200 calls waiting at any one time, so plan on spending a half hour waiting on hold. There is no way to revert to the old software. It is a nightmare!

Grr!

I purchased the Garmin 200 after reading a lot of positive reviews on Amazon. It was a great product - simple design, easy to use. Unfortunately, it started to malfunction after 3 months. For example, it would just shut itself down even though it was plugged into a running car. Then the connection between the unit and the charger AND the charger and the car began to weaken. I say both because the red light that indicates the charger is plugged in doesn't always turn on, and if it's on, the unit doesn't always charge. I have another cigarette car charger that works just fine so I know the problem isn't my car. When I was able to get both connections going in my car, the unit would display that it was trying to read the connection to my computer. For something that is over $100 and was only used 3 times (once a month on average) for approximately 2 hours at a time, it should last more than 3 months. For those who are wondering, I didn't leave it in a freezing cold or oven-hot car and kept it in a drawer in my desk when it was not being used.

When I contacted Garmin to get a replacement unit or charger within the warranty period, I was told that the unit had to be completely dead to qualify for a replacement. As most people know, electronic items often exhibit problems well before they fully die, if ever. If my unit starts to malfunction when I'm driving 65mph down the freeway, it's "completely dead" to me because I can't fuss with it and safely drive at the same time. Garmin's "has to be dead" policy is a pretty poor stall tactic to run out the warranty period. For that reason, I'm replacing my unit with another brand.

I'd been pricing this product for over a year but wasn't impressed with the sales or discounts the stores were offering. On a whim, I went to Amazon.com and found a refurbished Garmin for $85.00 total - no tax & no shipping charges so I ordered it and received it even sooner than I expected. I have used it and would never know it wasn't new. I am very pleased with this product for the price !

We bought our Nuvi 200 16 months ago and have had problems finding business addresses that were established 3 years ago. I checked for updates in the beginning of winter and couldn't find any on the Garmin website. Today I went back to their site and they have discontinued this particular model and there are no updates available. What a waste of money and I feel had by Garmin. We will not buy another product from them. They dumped all of these models on the market and now they are basically useless. It really ticks me off that we went out and bought the cable to download updates.... Garmin, SHAME ON YOU!!!

Customer Buzz
I've had the Nuvi 200 since March of 2008. I purchased it for about $160 (at the time, a great deal) and haven't looked back. The unit does everything I expected, and thought it's a little beauty, it's not without its warts.

First, the good things. I like the list of points of interest. It's fairly complete and up-to-date, though things that changed within about a year of my purchase date weren't on the lists. Of course, that would be expected on any database, so it's not exactly a flaw. The display is readable and fast to show things and I really like the recalculation speed for this unit. Within 10 seconds of jumping off a calculated route, the 200 gives a new route to your destination. This is a little irritating sometimes if I intentionally jump off, to get gas, for example, but that's something that I would expect all units to do.

For the most part, the Nuvi 200 gives great routes to various points, though a couple of times I've wondered why it chose a particular route. It's set by default to route tothe shortest distance, so it's possible that a longer route that would go faster might not get chosen. Since this unit doesn't do any kind of traffic updates, I guess that this is a reasonable expectation.

Now the gripes. When you choose to select a destination by address, the Nuvi 200 automatically asks you to type in state you want to go to. It seems to me that the default should be the state you're already in. Even a choice of "Is this address in ?" would be a faster option. Secondly, the keyboard is permanently set to be alphabetical instead of QWERTY. this means you have to find the letters of your destination on the grid provided. Since it's not any kind of standardized grid, it's tough to remember what character is where on the keyboard. Every time I have to type something in, I have to stop and think about exactly how to spell it. On a QWERTY, I don't think, I just type. Again, annoying and counterintuitive.

The only other gripe I have is the cost of the update maps. I bought the unit for $160, but the new update maps for 2009 are available for $100. Does this mean that the hardware itself is only worth $60? I find that a little hard to swallow. I know that compiling such a large amount of data is expensive, but it's not like they have to start from scratch every single year. the vast majority of the map info in the update is exactly the same as last year's info, so it would seem to me that the additional cost of the updates wouldn't be that great.

I'm wondering if they're trying to make people buy new units with this policy. I am seriously tempted to purchase a unit upgrade (to, say, a nuvi 205 or even a 265) for $200 rather than spend $100 on just a set of maps. Either way, the technology has gotten fairly cheap, so it's a tossup.

Would I buy the nuvi 200 again? Definitely. When traveling in an unfamiliar city, it's a great tool. In the year since I bought it, the technology has gotten much better, so an upgrade is certainly doable. the Nuvi 200 has everything I need in a GPS unit. It's just that it's lacking a couple of things I want.

Customer Buzz
The Nuvi 200 is a great unit. I purchased 3. But here is the downside, vs purchasing a TomTom, you will pay through the nose for updated maps, and yes they definitely need updating. You can pay [...] per unit per year, [...] for lifetime updates. What is lifetime, for the life of the unit. Is that two years, three years? Is it transferable to a new Garmin unit you purchase? NO! So what's with the word lifetime? Sounds like it should be FLIMFLAM!

Everyone has a multi-unit discount plan for software, but not Garmin. TomTom on the other hand allows you to correct maps and routes that are in error. From what I have read they also have the most up to date maps.

I will give the TomTom a try, I originally chose Garmin because of the stellar reviews but the back end costs for correct map data seems to me to put TomTom ahead in that respect.

Bottom line, I would have to pay more for maps then I paid for the units and that's just not happening.

I found out about this Garmin GPS through my sister & brother-in-law having one for all their drivers in their business. So since my son travels from Illinois to Florida all the time, even after having some difficulty after a stroke, I bought him the same kind. All the drivers and my son wouldn't be without it.

Customer Buzz
Got a 2008 Map base unit and tried to install 2009 map update via CD. Unit tells me it does not have enough space. I preceded to move all data off into a temp folder to clear the unit. Assumed the update software would know what to do to make it functional under the new 09 Map data - assumed wrong, unit now knows nothing (Ha, total Microsoft logic). Called support, the guy said I needed to make about 350 MB worth of room by deleting the "text"& "voice" folder while leaving all else intact. Those two folders amount to about 11MB, what a joke. How is a non Garmin engineer supposed to know what to clear and what to leave to get the update. The tech said the units were not designed for updates when faced with the problem??????? So what are the update CDs doing on store shelfs??? As a Pilot I used to admire Garmin for their product and technical support, but I think their support and marketing strategy's are pulling them off their high horse. I have owned some of the earliest aviation units like the GPS90 and the more recent 2K Garmin 396, our department recently purchased a 250K G1000 Frasca and we don't even have free access to their training software so faculty can familiarize with the system. Their training software must be purchased and is low key and requires most new PCs in the department to be equipped with high end video cards to run a a G1000 simulator that graphical is reminiscent of a mid 1990s game. To get back to the Nuvi200 issue, I guess its a disposable unit. To all of you that might think I am clueless and the update is possible, have at it. A $150 unit is not worth spending 5hr in time experimenting with proprietary files to update. Unit works fine just don't plan on updating it. Good luck.

Works wonderfully and accurately, thugh I sometimes wonder why it chose the route it did in areas I know well. Then, when I get there, I understand the reason. I am very happy with the product.

Customer Buzz
It is exactly the GPS what you need. Simple, ligth, portable, it talks in different language. So it has everything you need as a normal GPS user at an excellent price.
