| Usable voice recognition is something we've been waiting to see for a long time. Reaching over to type out directions on your GPS isn't just difficult, it can feel downright dangerous. There's even a warning on every GPS not to do it. But who has the time to sit still and punch in a destination? Well, now you can have your hurry and your directions too. The nüvi 800s aren't the first GPS navigators to offer voice recognition, but the level of flexibility they offer sets a new standard for simple and intuitive use. The device comes with a little remote control that mounts on your steering wheel. It has two buttons. One is, "listen." The other is, "stop listening". Hit the "listen" button to start voice recognition. Then you can speak any of the words that appear on the display, and the device will understand, or you can ask questions based on most points of interest. Say, "find nearest Italian restaurant," for example, and you’ll get a list of nearby spots. Say "go to" and name of the one you want, and you get turn-by-turn directions to dinner. The nüvi also knows the names of many large business brands, so you can just say, "find place, Starbucks," if that's your coffee mojo. Of course, if you know the address you want to go to, you can say that too, and the nüvi will give you directions, all without having to reach over to the dashboard and touch it. | ||||

| The super-bright, 4.3-inch (diagonal) touchscreen display gives is anti-glare for ease of viewing during the day and automatically changes its color profile for easy viewing at night or in dim light. It offers 2d or 3D perspective views. The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. Multi-Destination Routing
This lets you enter several spots into the device (day care - supermarket-cleaners - office - day care, for example) and it will plot the fastest route. And once you've found the best router, the "Route Planning" feature lets you save up to 10 different routes, garmin touts the feature for providing, "the most efficient route for errands, deliveries and sales calls." The feature also makes this an instant essential accessory for anyone who shops garage sales (you know what we're talking about).
A trip log provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points, so you can see where you've been on the map.
Where Am I?
garmin's "Where Am I?" feature is a useful safety feature on all nüvis, but voice recognition makes it even better.
On any nüvi (including this one), you can just tap "Where Am I?" to find the closest hospitals, police stations, fuel stations, nearest address and intersection. Also see your exact latitude and longitude coordinates. With the 800s, all you have to do is say "Where am I?" to get the info.
Where's My Car?
Like the nüvi 700s, the 800s will also remember where you parked. It automatically marks your position when you remove it from the windshield mount, so you can navigate with nüvi on foot and find your way back to your vehicle. Perfect for unfamiliar spots and crowded lots such as amusement parks, stadiums and malls.

Very satisfied with the Garmin 880 performance .. directions are clear and precise and the Voice commands work quickly and well. A problem with one address was quickly overcome by selecting "I AM HERE" which correctly placed the address in the system.
I had to return this product because the speaker quality was very bad. And who wants this thing running through the FM speakers creating a constant buzz? As well, the multi-point route planning is not very intelligent or flexible.
I have been using this for several weeks and I am very satisfied. The windshield mount is easy to use and easily adjusted to keep the GPS in easy view. Takes a little experiemtation to explore the menus and I probably have not found all the features. I'm not sure the voice recognition feature is worth it at this point, but the touch screen and screen images are great!
After 6 months of reading other reviews and comparing prices and features of other models I finally purchased this unit. It was well worth the wait.
THIS GPS IS NOT PERFECT BUT CLOSE . THIS IS MY FIRST ONE BUT I HAVE TO SAY WHAT WAS I WAITING ON . I LIVE IN COLORADO AND BELIEVE ME WE GET SOME NASTY SNOW STORMS SOME ARE WHITE OUT YOU CANT SEE MORE THAN A 100 FT THEN TO MAKE IT WORSE THE ROUTE U TRAVEL GETS SHUT DOWN AND WHAT DO U DO IT COULD MEAN UR SURVIVAL OR NOT . LET ME QUICKLY GIVE U WHY I BOUGHT ONE WE JUST HAD A HORRIBLE BLIZZARD A FEW WEEKS AGO I WAS DRIVING MY NORMAL ROUTE AND BAM THE ROUTE WAS CLOSED THEY DETURED ME , ANOTHER WAY I DIDNT KNOW I FOLLOWED OTHER CARS BUT NO HELP I WAS SO FLUSTRATED I ACTUALLY THOUGHT OF STOPPING AND SLEEPING IN MY CAR REALLY BAD IDEA I WENT ALITTLE FARER AND PRAYED I FIND SO HELP NOTHING , SO I STOPPED IN A 7/11 FOR SOME FOOD AND THOUGHT I WOULD ASK ONE MORE TIME PLEASE HELP ME AND THE ATTENDENT SAYS OH YEA GO DOWN 3 BLOCKS AND TURN RIGHT AND FOLLOW IT OUT ALL THE WAY AND U WILL BE HOME SO FOR 2 1/2 HOURS I WAS ONLY 3 BLOCKS AWAY FROM MY WAY HOME AND DIDNT KNOW IT NEEDLES TO SAY A GPS IS PRICELESS . I bought the unit primarily for the speech recognition feature. This is my third generation Garmin GPS and after considerable comparing, Garmin is the leader in this field although slightly pricey. The 850 is a discontinued model but as far as I can see, it only lacks the lane assist feature and Bluetooth capability. However, considering this unit originally sold for about $800, the price they are going for now makes for a great deal even without those two features.
I have had 4 different GPS units in the last 20 years, and this unit certainly has the quickest learning period (5 min or so!).

I love the Garmin Nuvi. I have read reviews about not being able to hear it. From my experience it works very well. Easy to set up and understand. Love the hands free option. I am so glad I bought this.
