HI I PURCHASED Garmin nüvi 780 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator,I HAD IT ABOUT 1 MONTH, THIS UNIT IS AWESOME, I LOVE ALL THE FEATURES, I SHOPPED AROUND FOR A LONG TIME,AND AMAZON HAS THE BEST PRICE AND GOOD SERVICE,I LIKE THE FREE SHIPPING.
This product is replacing a multi-use HP iPAQ PDA which used TomTom software. I have had the Garmin for a few days now and have found:
1. Locks into satellites relatively quickly (I live in Rochester, NY).
2. FM transmitter was easy to set up and worked well.
3. Display is clear and easy to interpret.
4. MSN Direct worked after a couple of reactivation requests.
While I knew what was in the box, I thought it was rather stingy that Garmin didn't even include a protective sleeve for the unit. A $40.00 extra at the Garmin store included the case and a ac-charger.
Went for the Garmin over experience with my wifes' Magellan Masetro 4000 than got confused on a recent trip to the Tampa FL region more than a couple of times on the Interstates.
I purchased one Garmin 780 and it would not sync to satellite, the maps were old & routing was not good. I have a major shopping center that has been there for 5 years, 6 miles from my house that was not listed under the shopping icon.
When I followed driving directions, I would turn when they indicated and then I was asked to u-turn and go to another street. I new the first street was correct.
When I took it to Las Vegas from California, it would not sync to the new area for about 1/2 an hour,and then did not show even the major strip Casino Hotels.
Very disappointed and don't know where to go from here - stay with another Garmin or choose something else.
I ordered the Nuvi 780 as an upgrade to my Nuvi 255W. This was a backwards step. Granted the 780 has an FM transmitter, Bluetooth, MSN Direct etc; I enjoy the navigation quality of the 255W. I returned the 780 as the MSN Direct was my motivation for purchasing the 780; the Msn feature only works when plugged into the auto adapter, and by the time I arrive at my destination it still may not have the updates for movie times/weather etc which is the reason for the feature. I will purchase another unit from Amazon! Amazon is great! I'll look into the new Nuvi 1390 as an upgrade to the 255W (which will be handed down to a family member).
This is my second GPS system I have owned. I replaced a Garmin C340 with the Nuvi 780. The 780 is absolutely awesome.
The Bluetooth works good. I wouldn't go as far as saying great. The volume needs to be turned down or the caller on the other end gets some echo. Otherwise the sound is clear and matching to my Motorola phone was seemless.
The features on this GPS far exceed the competition. Maps are accurate. features are easy to use. I just love it all around. Paired up with the MSN network, you just can't go wrong!
I used to be a Garmin guy. After purchasing this unit, this will be MY LAST GARMIN GPS ever. I bought this specifically to listen to audiobooks and Bluetooth over FM. The FM TRANSMITTER features in the Garmin GPS JUST DOESN't WORK - PERIOD. I called Garmin support and they basically said - we know the FM transmitter doesn't work in most places because it is not strong enough. THEN WHY THE HE** PUT IN FEATURE IN KNOWING IT DOESN'T WORK!!!! It is the most ridiculous response I have ever heard from a company. Unfortunately it is past my Best Buy return date so I am stuck with it. Hopefully I will prevent someone else from making the same mistake.
This item is not what I expected. It takes a long time searching for satellite. I find myself looking in my thomas guide more. This was a pricy item and not worth it.
This Garmin 780 GPS is magic. I investigated the navigation products for months before I purchased, and I'm glad I settled on this baby. What can I say in a nutshell...It works. The thing truly amazes me with features beyond map navigation. This machine thinks, and it let's you know it.
Besides being right on accurate directions, it features great visability with its wide screen. It's bright during the day,then after dusk it switches to a deeper color for night mode,so not to blind you while driving.The bluetooth feature is such a plus,it works as an incredible hands free phone system. The MSN direct is a great add on for the traffic, movie times, stock prices and more.
I think it's great the way it warns me of upcoming construction tie-ups miles ahead. This gives me plenty of time to divert.
There's so much more I could say about it, but to keep it short...As one who has logged many of road miles for sales appointments in the residential market, I wish I had this unit years ago. It's a time saver, a co-pilot, and it's a keeper.

I had a TomTom GO-910 for a number of years, and was very happy with it's performance, especially it's accuracy. However it's niggly little qurks made it a pain to use. The poor quality of it's mount, and charging connection along with the inability to read the screen in daylight made it problematic.
The constant need to re-boot it and the gamble of it's coming alive again was the final straw. My decision to purchase the Garmin over a newer version of the TomTom was based on the reviews found on Amazon.
Very easy to use, very intutive. Easy to read screen, great mount, and good graphics are a huge advantage.
However, short or no battery life when not plugged in are a pain. We just came back from a trip to Washington D.C., and it got us lost where the TomTom would not have! We're taking it to California, which is why I bought it, and I will make sure I plan the trip out on a map first, just so if it screws up, I'll have a fighting chance.
FYI, if the Bluetooth feature is important to you (you are paying extra for it) you s/b aware that many phones and Blackberry's have serious bluetooth issues with Garmin Nuvis. Many will only connect one time (after power on) and when it does connect, they drop easily. See blogs and search the internet about these issues before you purchase.
Garmin tech support seems helpless and is incapable or unwilling to get these issues resolved. They can't tell you if or when these issues will be addressed. They can't tell you which phones will work perfectly without a problem. Even their so-called compatible phones can have issues.
If you have similar issues, please complain loudly and bitterly. Maybe if this issue starts affecting their sales they will a do a much better job of giving this issue the serious attention and resources it needs. Right now all they do is try to backdate you to an older version of Bluetooth s/w (which didn't work) or they tell you to keep watching their websites for bluetooth upgrades but can't tell you when, if ever, these issues will be resolved.
