and a 4.3-inch diagonal widescreen
4.3-inch screen
Widescreen -- See Better, See More
The widescreen format gives you 70% more actual screen area than a 3.5-inch screen. Primarily this translates into a better view of the area through which you are driving. This is especially useful in showing you what parks, restaurants, ATM, gas stations, etc. are nearby, or in letting you know whether a detour is a good idea. Also, the device itself is larger, meaning controls on the screen are more widely spaced and somewhat easier to push.

FM Transmitter -- Hear Better, Hear More
Instead of straining your ears to hear turn-by-turn directions or your favorite MP3s, you can enjoy wireless FM audio transmission via the nüvi 660's wireless FM transmitter. Tune your car's radio to the appropriate station and you'll hear all the nüvi's audio, including voice prompts, MP3s, audio books, and more, directly through your vehicle's stereo system. The nüvi 660 includes many "must-have" entertainment and travel tools, including digital music and audio book playback, JPEG picture viewer, currency converters, and more. All these great features make the nüvi 660 a complete Personal Travel Assistant.

First Rate Map Data
The nüvi 660 comes ready to go right out of the box with preloaded City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty POI database with hotels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply touch the color screen to enter a destination, and nüvi takes you there with 2D or 3D maps and turn-by-turn voice directions. garmin gets its map data from NAVTEQ, a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

In addition, the nüvi 660 accepts custom points of interest (POIs), such as school zones and safety cameras and lets you set proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs

Important note about map updates: Due to our high volume of sales, almost every garmin portable GPS navigator sold by Amazon.com will come with the most recent map version. If you ever do need a map update, you can purchase one from Amazon.com at our garmin Store.

Hands-Free Calling
In more and more places, it is becoming illegal to use cell phones while driving without a hands-free kit. The nüvi 660's Bluetooth capability, microphone and speaker lets match it to any bluetooth-capable phone to make hands-free mobile phone calls. Simply dial the phone number with the nüvi's touch screen keypad to make a call on a compatible phone. To answer an incoming call, just tap the screen and speak into the built-in microphone. Making and taking calls on the road has never been easier, or safer. In addition, garmin makes it a breeze to look-up and dial numbers from your personalized phone book or even tap into your cell phone's call history log.

Integrated FM Traffic Receiver

TMC traffic service coverage mapgarmin/tmc-coveragemap-350.gif" style="width: 350px; height: 220px;" />
Steer clear of traffic with an integrated FM traffic receiver designed to receive alerts from TMC Clear Channel about traffic tie-ups and road construction that might lie ahead on your route. All you have to do is simply touch the screen to view traffic details and you'll be ready to detour around any problem area. And if you end up missing a turn, or you're forced into a detour that is not relayed through the traffic receiver, the nüvi's sophisticated automatic routing will get you back on track in no time.

In most areas, TMC Clear Channel traffic broadcasts are continuous — there's no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a "silent" FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions.

A 3-month subscription to TMC Clear Channel's Total Traffic Network is included with purchase of this device. For more information on subscription fees, coverage in individual cities, and traffic data networks in the United Kingdom and Europe, check the garmin website.

Easy To Use Interface
garmin's interface is a key to their success and one of the things that makes their devices such a pleasure to use. Simple controls and sub-screens make it easy to enter or search for destinations and get data about your trip.

Navigation is just the beginning. The nüvi 660 features travel tools including JPEG picture viewer, MP3 player, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, calculator and more. It also comes with garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature, and configurable vehicle icons that let you select car-shaped graphics to show your location on the map.

Customer Buzz
I bought this product for my wife on February 2008 and she loved it from the beginning. It is an excellent product, reliable and efficient.

There is a problem though that I wish it was different. It seems that the wireless transmission does not work properly if your car antenna is located in the back of the car like in our case. However, we loved this product is so good we just worked around it by using the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack.

Otherwise, the Built-in travel and entertainment tools are awesome. My wife was planning to by an IPod, but after using the digital music player she gave up on the IPod. It has a great and quality sound.

We recommend anyone to buy this product!

Customer Buzz
Let me start off by saying I spent several months in researching which GPS unit to buy, what brand, what type, etc.. I even went as far as putting a tom tom on layaway at my base exchange. Then a little birdy told me I should rethink it. So I lit up my laptop and started the what seemed like a never ending process of research. I looked at tom tom and magellan's but the more I read those I kept reading the word garmin. So I started to concentrate on Garmin.

I must have covered every series Garmin has made. I read several reviews if not several hundred. So after getting cross eyed from reading all the negative and positive reviews it came down to two models. The nuvi 770 or the nuvi 660. So I zeroed in on the two and went over the reviews over and over. I was at a stand still, I was starting to pull out my chest hairs cause I don't have the hair on my head to pull out. I just happened to be talking to one of my co-workers and told him I was looking to purchase a GPS and if he knew anything about them. He told me that he had a nuvi 660, good for me, and told me that he was very pleased with it. I told him it was between the 770 and 660 and I asked him if I could borrow his for a week. He agreed and off I went. I put it through its paces and a couple of days later I placed my order for the nuvi 660.

I have only had this unit for a month now and it has performed to my expectations. For those looking to purchase any GPS unit I highly recommend looking into the refurbished units. The 660 usually sells for around $600, if not more, new. I bought a refurbished unit for under $200 and it works and looks like it was new. However beware, if you are looking for the FM transmitter capability you might not get it with the refurbished model. The one I got was evidently manufactured in the United Kingdom at a time when it was illegal to have it broadcasted over your car stereos. I found that out when I called customer support after I realized that it was missing on my unit, cause it was on my co-workers unit when I borrowed his. Hey not a problem with me cause I had an adapter that I used to plug my IPOD into the car. I pluged it into my nuvi and hit the aux button on my radio and guess what it solved that issue. Heck I think that is even better than the FM transmitter cause you don't have to find a compatible station or listen to the static. Customer support even told me that I could even send it back to them if I wanted and they would send me a new one. I don't think I'm going to bother.

As far as the bluetooth feature. I am overjoyed at its performance. It had no problems pairing up with both phones I had. I had a nokia and then I switched to a sanyo. The internal speaker is somewhat efficient. There are times when I have a hard time hearing it but that is usually because I have my windows down going 70 mph down the freeway or in the city with alot of traffic noise but again what's my fix, I push the aux button on my radio and wah lah I can now turn up the volume. My wife does say however that I sometimes sound tinny or fade out. Although I had someone call me from my nuvi to talk to me and they sounded fine. One feature that I wish the nuvi had is that when a call does come in that it would automatically answer it instead of having to push the answer button. That isn't a big issue for me but it would be more convenient.

As far as the window mount. I have read where it keeps falling off the window. As of today it hasn't fallen off once on me without me forcefully pushing on it and even then it takes a little bit for it to happen. But I am planning on buying the friction holder for the dash in the future. That is what my co-worker had when I borrowed his and I liked it.

As far as the battery life I have not been able to judge how long it lasts because I always have it plugged into the car

As far as navigation is concerned it was usually right on when I arrived at my destination. There were a couple of times when it led me to nowhere. I am stationed in Florida and am getting transferred to Virginia so I drove up there to do some apt/house hunting. The nuvi took me to the front door of the place I was going to stay while looking for a place. I had a List of 17 places to look at and I inputed the addresses and saved them to my favorites so all I had to do was hit the name of the apt I wanted to go to and there I was. Except for one apt complex. Unless they started to build apts under the water then I could have missed it. Other than that it took me to the rest of them with no problems. I loved not having to try to read the pages from mapquest and drive at the same time or to constantly have to pull off the road to get my bearings. It took a hell of alot of stress out of my already stressfull task and even if I wasn't paying attention to where I was the "ding" would remind me that I have a turn coming up and it was always in enough time for me to get into the proper lane. It did take me on a route where a bridge was closed causing me to take another route by hitting the detour button but that wasn't the fault of the unit. There were times when the unit wouldn't recognize the address but I got around that by typing in the intersections that were on the directions of the apt guide books and that usually put me in the right area and I would find the place. There was only one time where I had to use the directions provided by the apt guide book. If it wasn't for the couple of misguided directions I would probably have given it a 5.

As far as satellite aquisition it doesn't take much time at all. The time it does take doesn't matter cause I let my car warm up and when I leave it has already aquired the satellite.

I can agree about it not coming with a printed manual, even though I saved the manual on my laptop when I borrowed the one from my co-worker and read through, but even without reading it, it didn't take me long to learn about it by just pushing buttons and experimenting with it.

On the trip up and down I didn't have to worry about where the next gas station was or rest area or places to eat. I just had to hit the "where to" and then hit the food/lodging and there were the distances to whatever I needed. So I didn't have to worry if I was one notch to empty and sweating if I will be able to make it to the next gas station or if my kids had to use the bathroom by the annoucement "the next rest area is in 25 miles so let me know if you have to go before we pass the one coming up." It also had hospitals, attractions, recreation, community, airports, parking, auto services, shopping, banks and other stuff.

As far as the speedometer function. Well I don't know about you but I made sure there was one in my car before I bought it. :o) There is also a complaint the the include windshield mount isn't legal in ca or mn. Well that's why there is a disclamer saying to check with your local law enforcement before purchasing to find out about such things or just buy a friction mount for your dash board. Problem solved.

Even with some of the flaws discussed in reviews and actually witnessed personnally for what I paid for it I think has worked like a GPS should. There are valid complaints and then there are some nit pick complaints. As time goes by and I have owned it longer and been able to better comment on the product I will update my review as necessary. But as of now I would recommend this product to any who are in the market and again you can save alot of money by looking at the refurbished units from amazon.

I gave this as a going away gift to a friend who moved from Calif. to Georgia. He loved it. I borrowed one from a relative & used it to travel from Mobile, Al to Atlanta, Ga. Great product. We encountered a road closure on our trip & it handled an alternate route perfectly. Highly recommended.

Customer Buzz
This GPS is feature packed and don't get me wrong, some of the features are cool. However, it fails (in my case) at what it was designed to do; which is navigate. More often than not, it takes a couple minutes for it to recognize where you are and sometimes not at all.

Pros: The screen automatically adjusts for daytime and nighttime navigation. The bluetooth is nice and works fairly well. Sound quality is loud enough to hear even with excessive road noise. Has tons of features and looks great.

Cons: It comes with an FM transmitter which is more of a gimmick than a great feature and it doesn't work very well. I attached a wire behind my radio to get a better signal and it worked a little better. The navigation is slow and takes a long time to position itself.

Customer Buzz
I purchased the 660 a year ago this month. I have used it many many times and have found that it is the only way to travel. Especially for me because I have no since of direction. I can't find anything alone. So this is a GODs gift to me. Also, I'm a fisherman so I find new lakes many miles away through un-inhabited back country and it takes me right to it and back without even a worry. And for you married guys it saves so much aggravation because she can't yell at you anymore finding places. It takes you directly there and you won't get lost. I think that is the best part of it. NO MORE ARGUING IN THE CAR.. love it. Get one...fast.

Customer Buzz
It's not without it's flaws, the same annoyances you will find in any GPS, sometimes choosing the wrong route, or not knowing about a small street (of course software updates can remedy some of this) but this Garmin is great, and it always gets you where you need to go. My only recommendation...TURN OFF THE VOICE! It will drive you crazy and you should be able to get where you're going just by checking the screen from time to time. I also use this on my motorcycle and that works well too! I used heavy duty zip-ties and bought a second mount here on Amazon...so far so good! Downside to that is it isn't waterproof...but I don't particularly like riding in the rain anyway!

Customer Buzz
This product is very good. The only problem I find is that it takes a while to acquire satellite which actually delays your startup.

Works well with memory card and yes, it can transmit the musci to your cars radio receiver very well.

Customer Buzz
We use the Garmin nuvi 660 all the time. The wide screen makes a lot of difference and it has all the features we need. It came with a trial for updating the map with traffic alerts that came in very handy.

Customer Buzz
The nuvi is by far the most practical GPS I have worked with!
the size of the touch screen, functions and the sensibility are ideal!

Customer Buzz
The Garmin 660 rates a 9.5 on the 10 scale. Since there is no need anymore, throw away those travel maps, fuel station locations and lodging brochures. We just returned from a 3,000 mile door to door, address to address vacation while testing our new GPS Nuvi and the results are in. WOW! The 660 does everthing but make coffee. The 660 with voice command alerts traffic and road work ahead with the ability to seek alternate routes 100 miles in advance. Because the 660 is so accurate the only glitch is in down town high density multi-ramp areas like D.C. where 30 feet is critical at 50 mph. Because of driver error, the 660 will guide the driver back to the key route with little loss of time. Our 660 found specific fuel brand stations, specific lodging and restaurants of our liking. While the GPS unit is but an electronic tool, it is by far the most innovative instrument for the common driver. Thank you, GARMIN.
