Customer Buzz
The Nuvi 500 is exactly what I thought it would be. I hike the hills alot and the topo maps are okay. My friend bought the extra maps for Colorado and Utah and there IS a big difference in quality. Had to download the, "Speaks street names" because it was not in the Nuvi 500. The battery does not last 8 hours as indicated in the specs so I bought another one for the trails.

This nuvi is a great deal and if it had a wider screen it would get a 5 stars from me. I like the fact that it goes right into navigating once it's turned on and that it's waterproof. It takes about a min or so without touching anything to start navigating, but if you're in a rush and need to see where you going just push view map. My nuvi 660 you have to touch view map everytime, it also cost me $800+ 2yrs ago. The prices are much more reasonable on GPS units now days so this is a great deal.

Cons: No bluetooth, Screen size
Pros: Great options in menu, easy to use, great for first timers, good price.

I want anyone that is buying this unit to be aware that you must order a USB cable seperatly. I am extremely dissapointed that it wasn't included. I can't even register the thing without it and its useless for planning routes and geocaching until I get it. I really wish it had pointed that little factoid out somewhere. Bad move guys!!

I use this on the road and trails. Still need to learn other features but do far I love it!

Customer Buzz
Water-resistant. Mode changes(walk/drive/bike). Custom routes. Large catalog of retail, etc. Did not use maps(paper)on recent trip!

This unit is very nice and is generally pretty easy to use if you are at all comfortable with electronics. I was concerned about the smaller size at first when being used in automobile mode, but it was not a noticeable problem. I have not been able to do any hiking/biking with it to check out the topographical navigation, but the features listed seem very good. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to use their GPS for both automobile navigation as well as take it hiking/biking.

This is the BEST GPS out there for the price. I bought this for my husband and we use it all the time. We love to take little weekend stints and hikes. I was looking for a GPS that would satisfy road, trails and water and found it in the Nuvi 500! And despite the fact that all the reviews at the time said it didn't talk to you, my husband registered it online, downloaded updated software and it does talk to you...but you can't talk to it. No biggie for us. We haven't used it on the water yet, but it does a great job on trails and roads. We also can upload our OWN pictures of our favorite sites, upload them to the Nuvi site (as well as keep them on your own GPS), and record the coordinates for others to check out some our favorite hiding places too! There's so much more too. I highly recommend it, especially if you are looking for one that converts easily from road to trail. This turned out to be an EXCELLENT investment. I really was pleased not only with the price, but the ease of use and available options! I am a Garmin customer for life! Thanks for putting out the perfect product for us!

I exchanged my nuvi 750 for this one so I could do some geocaching but still do all of the car navigating. It does the car navigation perfect. I have done half a dozen geocaches so far it has done we well. I usually get within 30 feet of the cache... not the best I would like, but I can usually do some searching and find it. I love that its durable and waterproof.
If you are looking for a good all around that you will use mostly in the car- this is your guy.
If you are looking for an all around that you will use mostly on the trail, you may look at the Colorado or Oregon (remember you will most likely have to purchase the road maps...)

I bought this GPS system for a friend who travels on business. He brought it with him when we went skiing. We found it to be easy to use, with a very clear screen. It's completely portable which is very handy if you have more than one vehicle. The audio comments can be turned on or off. We would highly recommend this GPS system.

I bought the Nuvi 500 to replace my tried-and-true Garmin StreetPilot i3.

One of my primary considerations is WATERPROOFness... my i3 has worked great on my MOTORCYCLE touring adventures, but when the rains came, it was either in the tank bag, or in a clear sandwich bag, held in place with a rubber band - not ideal.

There are motorcycle-specific GPS receivers, but they are all significantly more expensive. Frankly, I was attracted to the multi-purpose nature of this model. I've used it for motorcycle rides (just trial runs so far), bicycling, hiking/walking, and driving. I'm confident there are better solutions for each individual use - if you can afford a CAR GPS, and a HIKING GPS, and a MOTORCYCLING GPS, and a BOATING GPS, knock yourself out. The Nuvi 500 seems to do a very adequate job at all of that stuff.

Another feature I was looking for - and the Nuvi 500 has it - is the ability to enter a very specific ROUTE into it, and expect accurate directions. (When I'm motorcycle touring, it's all about the JOURNEY, not the DESTINATION. I want to plan the journey, rather than leaving it to GPS-receiver silicon. I could plan my routes using the i3, but it was a matter of entering up to 50 waypoints, and then selecting each one in sequence. Now I can just tell it to "follow route Day 2," and off we go.)

It has "modes" for automobile, bicycle, boating, and walking. (With a myriad of avatar options... when you're hiking, you can use some little blue trudging feet to indicate your current location. Cute!) Also, with a firmware upgrade (readily available at the Garmin website) you can add "Scooter" mode. (I'm guessing they don't have a "Motorcycle" mode for it, because they hope motorcycle riders will opt instead for the significantly-more-pricey Zumo models. But how different could "motorcycle" and "scooter" be, other than the gay factor? That's just a joke... scooters are great!)

This model doesn't have some of the other features found on a lot of high-end models. If you want a unit that speaks street names, or plays your MP3 tunes, or doubles as a cell phone or bluetooth... this may not be the one for you.

My only suggestion for Garmin would be - add a place to attach a lanyard/safety-tether! It would be nice, particularly when hiking, to be able to hang this around the neck, or attach it to a backpack with a carabiner. (Or to safety-strap it to the bicycle or motorcycle!)

Based on my experience, Garmin is VERY oriented toward customer service and satisfaction. They have bent over backwards to keep THIS customer happy. (That's a nice bonus to the fact that they make an excellent product.)
