I found this product to be excellent. It picks up satellites quickly and recalculates routes quickly when you decide to go off course. The routes it gave me so far are pretty direct.

It's easy to setup your route.

I'm using the traffic monitoring through MSN Direct, and this is an area which could be improved. I wish it showed traffic conditions (speed traffic is moving) directly on the route screen, instead of having to go to another screen.

The Nuvi nicely paired with my cell phone which was great which was an added bonus. The voice commands worked well.

When using the Nuvi to walk a route, it did take a little time (5 minutes) to get fully oriented to our walk, but that really caused no problems.

While the product could be improved it's really terrific and I highly recommend it.

Remote button on 885T that is required to activate "voice command" worked twice then died. I deleted the remote button from memory and attempted to reinstall but main unit does not see remote again. Tried a battery change but did not fix. Bluetooth also does not work. Main units on/off switch feels to be very cheap quality. Unit is very inaccurate and will show you on the highway while on a far spaced service road and still approaching an intersection when already there. I am having to mail my unit in for repair when needed for a trip. Market seems swamped with "reconditioned" Garmin's for sale. Now I see why. Wish I had kept my money.

Garmin nüvi 885T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct Service
Over all this is a good product, but I was dissapointed about two items. On other GPS's when you get to the point where you would turn, there would be a "Beep or Tone "to let you know where to turn, this is helpfull when there are other intersections close by. Other wise you have to take your eyes off the road to watch the info on the screen. This unit does not have this feature.
The audio level is not loud enough, even at 100%,you can listen to the audio through the car stero which makes it loud enough but then you can't listen to the Radio, which I enjoy on a long trip.

I recently purchased the Garmin 885t after having owned the Streetpilot C340. I felt that I wanted an upgrade for a couple of reasons. First, I liked the idea of being able to be more "hands-free" if I needed to make changes to my routes while driving and second I was hoping that the blueooth was good enough that I could also use my phone through the Garmin. The purpose would be to streamline what I need to hook up in my car.

I own an iPhone original and have tried a couple of FM transmitters for hands free calling in the car. Though they worked partially with my phone, none were completely compatible. I was so pleased to see how the Garmin immediately recognized my contacts and they are all up on the Garmin screen. Second, even though the iPhone does not support voice dial, I am able to verbally navigate through the Garmin to make calls. This for me is important so I don't have to fiddle with the phone in my car.

After having used the Garmin for a couple of weeks, I can say that I so far am very satisfied. The Garmin's navigation works as expected and as I was accustomed to with my older Garmin. I do enjoy the lane assist feature, which works well in my area. Be aware, however, that the Junction View does not work with Lane Assist in every area. This is not a problem for me as this is only an "extra whistle" from my perspective.

I am amazed at how it finds popular places and how well it understands voice commands. This function makes entering information so much easier. I also love how you can use Google Maps to directly send favorite places to the Nuvi, as well.

In regards to the Bluetooth, I find that the speakers are better than the nuvi 360 that I tried a year ago. I sent it back because the speaker and sound were awful on it. On the Nuvi 885t, I am able to hear the speakers well but was I was told that there was an echo on their end when I spoke. I purchased Garmin's external microphone and people I talk to now say that it sounds much better. I've talked several times on it with no problems.

The FM transmitter works just fine for me, especially if I am just tooling around town. As a matter of fact, I found a station in my area where the music that I downloaded to my Garmin sounds just like I'm listening to the FM radio. No static at all. I like using the FM option as I like having the ability to listen to my callers and Garmin commands through my car stereo. I will admit that when I travel distances, I will probably opt to use my aux. cable with my iPod due to the fact that the FM stations would change frequently on longer trips (which would be a pain).

I haven't had the chance to experience the MSN direct or the picture viewer (doubt I will ever use that) so I can't comment on those features. I would like to add that customer support at Garmin is wonderful. I had to call a few times with questions and they were extremely helpful, kind, and supportive. (My Garmin was originally shipped in the Russian language).

I have been experimenting with this unit and learning how to use the Garmin in the house while I don't have to concentrate on the road. Though it is user friendly, there is still a lot to learn. I also took it with me even if I knew where I was going to "practice" the features. I'd rather get a handle on how to use it when I know my route. As silly as it sounds, it does help!

Kudos to this unit! NO regrets, even though I felt it was more than what I wanted to pay for a GPS.

Over the years, I've owned nine Garmin GPS units. I've used them for sailing, hiking, horseback riding, geocaching, driving a charter bus and limousines, and on my own vehicles. Based on my experience and Garmin's support, I don't even consider any other brand. But I still do my homework before I buy any unit.

My wife and I usually find ourselves deciding to do something or go somewhere while we're already driving, so I thought the voice recognition Nuvi 885T would be a good idea. But I was concerned about reviews stating the unit's volume was too low and the remote didn't fit steering wheels. I also noted the mention of a free map update that wasn't. I telephoned Garmin, and as always, spoke with an American speaking English without an accent. They took the time to explain the volume controls to me and warned that there were two volume controls. They also took the time to measure the opening of the remote so I felt comfortable it would fit on my car. I bought the unit.

The unit worked perfectly right out of the box and I was amazed at how fast it acquired satellites inside my house. The quick start instructions are well written and easy to follow and I soon had the unit connected to the internet and Garmin so its software could be updated, and the map could be updated as well - free. I can also update the map free again if Garmin updates the map within 60 days after the first update. The remote also fit the leather-bound steering wheel on my 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport with room to spare. We found the volume on the unit adequate as long as the radio wasn't turned up too loud.

Then we had fun with the unit. It works as advertised and it solved our problem of inputting destinations while we were driving without leaning forward to touch the screen. The lane assist pictures are awesome, but I wished they would stay on the screen just a little longer (so I could show them off). The roadway speed limits on the screen are great. We even got a traffic alert from MSN without a destination programmed into the unit. The only disappointment I had so far is that Garmin is allowing customers to download its Eco-routing software free, but it's not compatible with the Nuvi 885T - yet.

I wrote a scathing review on the Garmin 785t. A Garmin CSR replaced the original 785t with a new 785t which was worse. In a surprise move, they replaced the second 785t with the 885t. This unit is awesome and I very highly recommend it.

In our family we have a Garmin 250 and a 880. The 885t's voice recognition is superior to the 880. Satellite acquisition is on par with the fastest of my experience and the need for recalculating was recognized within 2 seconds of passing the recommended turn. Graphics are top drawer and in my opinion, well superior to Tom Tom (before buying a Tom Tom, monitor the current suit brought by Microsoft against Tom Tom for OS patent infringement).

I am also pleased at the responsiveness of Garmin's CSR staff. All I did was explain the continuing problems and they spontaneously offered the 885t as a replacement. At a time when customer service is suffering from reduced staff due to budget cuts, Garmin did the right thing here and have won a loyal customer for now.

The nuvi 885t is a cutting edge unit at a fair market price. Will likely retire the 250 in place of a second 885t shortly.

My 1st GPS "experience" occurred a couple weeks ago when I drove a friend down to Long Island and he brought his Garmin Nuvi along for the trip. Prior to this I had never given much thought to the whole GPS thing. I mean, I'm a guy, I don't need directions, right? True. But a GPS makes driving so much more fun and interactive. It's like going from automatic to manual transmission. You're not just driving anymore. . . You're navigating. So I started researching the whole GPS thing. I even found out that civilian GPS got the green light from Reagan due to the Soviets downing a commercial 747 flight way back in 1983. OCD, I was obsessed with GPS. I had to have one. So I got the nuvi 885t.

This thing rocks really hard. Seriously, my car is like KITT from Knight Rider now. The voice recognition is out of this world. I love it. I was worried cause I was reading alot of reviews saying that the FM transmitter sucks, however, I find that it works great for me. One mans garbage is another mans fortune. That, coupled with voice recognition, is really fun. Just press the remote, say "music player" then "Bob Dylan" then "Desolation Row" and low and behold, you're jammin. Lots of fun. And since you don't have to look at the screen or touch it, you can do this while driving and making turns and stuff. All you safety conscious parents will love this. I'm not that concerned about safety yet, but maybe it'll impress the chicks and one day I'll be captain safety too. I just like it cause it's fun to use. The only thing that sucks is that songs are only separated by artist, not album. I like listening to albums. An album is a work of art by the artist and it's more than just a collection of songs. It transcends that. It tells a story. On the Nuvi, all the songs by an artist are just lumped together alphabetically. That's like throwing a stone at a beautiful stained glass window. It shatters the greater artistic masterpiece, leaving behind a scattered mess of pretty shards of broken glass. Maybe a software update can change this. Still, it's a minor compliant. Plus, if you got a song in your head that you wanna hear, just go to that artist and say the song name. Ok, what else? Unfortunately the MSN direct doesn't seem to work in my area. Maybe if you live close to a city you'll get some mileage out of it. Oh well, I'm sure it will kick in if I travel down to NYC or Boston, etc. I'll take a drive down the NYS thruway soon and try it out. I wanna see how the lane assist and junction view works too. Overall, I find everything works really well for me, even the FM transmitter and bluetooth. But the speech recognition is something that has to be tried to be believed. My car is KITT!!! Well, that's it for this review. I highly recommend the Nuvi 885t. Time to "find nearest taco bell."

EDIT: My bad, I was just playing with the Nuvi 885t and you can in fact search for songs in the music player by album. Sorry for any confusion my review my have caused.

I've had my 885T for about a week and a half. For the most part I like it and it has been useful. It has already made a few trips to unfamiliar spots in the city much less stressful and faster. It has its shortcomings though.

PROS: MSN Traffic service works well in Denver Metro area. Movie times seem accurate (I'm considering paying the one time fee). Slim size. Lane assist blew me away - how cool is that! Has been 99% accurate. Voice commands work really well even in noisy vehicle and allow for safer operation while driving. Voice command remote is unobtrusive and feels sturdy. Easily upload maps to unit directly from Google.

CONS: Suction cup mount falls often even on flat Jeep windshield (I'll end up using the disc sticky mounts). My Samsung Alias phone is not specifically supported for Bluetooth - seriously it's one of the most popular phones. Subsequently bluetooth connectivity has been frustrating and inconsistent. Speakers will probably suffice for a quiet ride but I'm in a Jeep with 32" mudders. FM transmitter (to hear voice prompts over sound system in your car) is worthless. New map update was nearly 2G and took a day and a half to download on DSL.

All in all I expected a little more functional quality for the price but I'd still recommend it to a friend that loves tech stuff but would recommend a cheaper model to someone who just wants a good GPS.

Excellent features and very good GPS. It gets a satellite lock inside my house!!! The voice recognition is the gem in this thing. It really works and once you start using it, it is very useful and functional. You don't have to push buttons.

Positives: Voice recognitions, lots of POIs, on-line sites like POI-Factory to add custom POIs (easy to do), and a very good set of features. I have tried (it works) but not extensively used the bluetooth hands free and mp3 player yet (8GB microSD card ordered) but I think it will be useful. MSN Direct is the way to go and works very well. I am getting helpful traffic updates in Louisville.

Negatives: I have to say the volume on the unit should be higher. I realize the FM radio option is there, but sometimes you are listening to the radio or a CD and it is hard to hear the Garmin. On a trip do they expect you to only listen to the Garmin? I figure if I use the mp3 option on an FM channel that maybe that is a way around the CD because I assume it will give voice prompts through the music audio (have not tried). Also the few hands-free calls I have taken have given very poor sound on the Garmin speakers making it not useful (maybe a software update? Not sure they are using the A2DP or a good profile.). They must fixe these two issues. They should already have this perfected. One other small potential issue. The band for the voice recognition button barely fits my steering wheel (last notch), on some others that are larger it could be an issue (but I think this may be minor)?

I will post more as I use it. I should give it 4 starts because of the sound issues. I will come back and re-review as I use it. It is worth buying. My brother and siter have Tom-Tom and another Garmin (780) and this is definitely better. The voice command and satellite lock really distinguishes it. When you are driving you don't want to have to reach and push buttons on it. Garmin, please improve the audio ASAP.
