I just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 260w through Amazon. The service was wonderful and exactly as promised. I love the Garmin. It is so easy to use and I especially like the fact that I can wander all I want and it can always take me home. The directions are accurate and I can change my route any time and it recalculates immediatly for me. I understand that this model has been discontinued, but have had no problem purchasing accesseries such as a cover and the bean bag holder. This is my first GPS and I am very satisfied.
We thoroughly enjoy the GPS especially the ease to operate the unit. It has been a savor for us.
I resisted getting this type of GPS for years. I have had two Magellans, and my Meridian Green has been on my dash for six years now. But I used that mostly for Geocaching. Moving to Maine (from CA), and just getting around is a challenge. When my sig other bought one the Nuvi 260 3.5 because he travels so much for work, I got to play with it. The more I used it, the more I wanted one for my car.
What I love most about it: that it allows me to take routes I might not know exist, and it speaks out all of the street names. This becomes VERY important in a state where a road can have a different name depending on which township you are driving through.
I have only had one problem, and it scared the hell out of me. I typed in an address, and was traveling at night. The GPS routed me through some pretty back-woods roads, and I ended up on a dirt road not even on the county map. I drive a 2WD vehicle, so when I realized that I was heading off-road into mud, I stopped, and the GPS immediately spoke: "Recalculating". Oh crap. I had to turn around and turned out I was three miles out of my way. She did eventually route me to the correct spot, but that was a pucker-factor moment.
I would recommend this GPS to frequent travelers, though I haven't tried using it yet for Geocaching. I have heard that it isn't as precise for close range pin-pointing as a hand-held Garmin or Magellan, though.
The average family looking for directions to the doctors, school, store, or special event will be more than happy with this GPS. It's powerful yet simple at a great price. No need to pay for all the other bells and whistles that you may never use.
The Amazon listing is missleading. Implying that you also need to purchase a mount and power cord for the car. These items come with the GPS so there is no need to purchase them. It has everything you need to have it running in your car in less than 5 minutes. Happy trails.
I purchased this unit a few weeks ago and have had no problems. I live in a very remote area in Southern Mississippi and the Nuvi 260w picks up a satellite in a matter of seconds. I have the 2009 map and it lists some of the POIs. For a sub $200 unit, it is a terrific buy. It speaks the street names and is pretty accurate.
I did a bit of investigating before purchasing the gps unit, and was concerned that some of the reviews complained about the length of time to acquire a satellite signal. For me, it is almost instantaneous. The 205w was my next choice, but I got the 260w for about 20% cheaper for about the same features. Just remember, the unit may pick up a signal quicker/slower depending on where you live in the US. Also, register your unit on garmin.com. Garmin's customer service is excellent.
If you want a gps unit that speaks street names, picks up a signal quickly, has a decent amount of POIs, and runs below $200 online, I would recommend this unit.

As a first time user, I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 260W after reading how high it was rated in a consumer article. After receiving the unit, I am sold on it. First, the screen is clear and easy to understand. It takes only moments to locate a satellite. The spoken directions are clear and precise. The funny thing is that it can't distinguish the abbreviation of DR to mean Drive. It calls DR Doctor. So, we are told to turn onto Oak Doctor. It's lightweight, easy to store and so far has helped us navigate to addresses we would have had a difficult time finding. My only problem is that all cables are not included. You do not get the cable to hook into the computer to register or upgrade. Also, it would have been nice to have had at least a soft case included.
This unit performs as it was advertised and is well worth the investment.
The Garmin nuvi 260W is a great product. I purchased a Garmin GPS in 2002 and was so dissatisfied with it (i.e., tiny screen; too many buttons) that I returned it to Amazon after one trial run. Wow, what a difference 7 years makes. The 260W is everything the earlier version was not. The screen is even easy for my senior-citizen eyes to read, and the user interface and operation is so easy. My wife, who is not a "button pushing" type person, can easily (and enjoyablly) use this product. Programming a trip is so easy and finding restaraunts and other places of interest has worked so seamlessly for us. A great product. A great buy.
This is a very simple and easy to use GPS that is incredibly good at getting you from point A to B as quickly as possible. Its pros are the wide screen, easy to mount, easy to use, tons of POIs, routes it chooses, value, and no "extra" features that you will never use. Its cons are it takes some time to boot up, there is no option to see the route listed rather than just seen on the map (you have to zoom out a lot if you want to see the whole route you are taking) and the ETA feature is not very accurate. Overall a really good buy so far for me.
